What is CBD?

What is CBD?

The term “CBD” is an abbreviation for the compound known as “cannabidiol”. Importantly, CBD is one of the many naturally occurring chemicals in the cannabis sativa plant known as “cannabinoids”.

Today, cannabidiol has gained global notoriety as a natural aid for both mental and physical ailments. While CBD is an organic compound found in cannabis, it often gets processed before being sold in many of the cannabidiol products we know today. These manufacturing steps include harvest and extraction, as well as the formulation into consumable goods.

Where Does Cannabidiol Come From?

Where Does Cannabidiol Come From?

Cannabidiol occurs naturally in the flowers of cannabis sativa. This plant species has several categories, including those referred to as “marijuana” and “hemp”. An overwhelming majority of the cannabidiol products on the market today are originally sourced from hemp. We will define hemp further in the next section of this CBD 101 guide.

Human beings have used cannabis for thousands of years. There is evidence that ancient Asian cultures were consuming cannabis 2,500 years ago. Even more incredible, prehistoric people cultivated hemp as a source of textiles and food over 10,000 years ago. Since then, it has played an integral role in developing nearly every major civilization on earth, including those found in Europe and North America.

Cannabinoids Explained

As mentioned in the CBD 101 introduction, cannabidiol is what is known as a “cannabinoid”. Cannabinoids are the primary active ingredients in the flowers of cannabis.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine website tells us that cannabis plants contain “about 426 chemical entities, of which more than 60 are cannabinoid compounds.” It is precisely the different characteristics of these compounds that give rise to our definitions of marijuana and hemp.

Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most famous cannabinoid. Importantly, this is the chemical found in cannabis that makes people feel “high”. THC levels are the primary differentiating factor for classifying marijuana and hemp.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the primary driving force behind the booming hemp industry of today. One of the primary reasons cannabidiol is so popular is that it does not get people “high” when consumed. However, it has many beneficial characteristics concerning health and wellness.

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a newly discovered cannabinoid that is gaining more attention on the global market. While we still have a good deal to learn about CBG, the cannabinoid shows real promise in health and wellness.

What is the Difference Between Marijuana and Hemp?

What is the Difference Between Marijuana and Hemp?

One of the most fundamental parts of CBD 101 is learning the difference between marijuana and hemp. Today, hemp is legal in the United States, while marijuana remains illegal.

According to the federal government, cannabis sativa plants that contain less than 0.3% THC are legally considered hemp. Conversely, marijuana plants are those that contain THC levels higher than 0.3%. Medical and adult-use marijuana markets in states like Colorado, California, and Michigan are built around this type of potent cannabis.

While hemp plants are restricted to producing high THC levels, there are no federal restrictions on the amount of cannabidiol grown in them. Hemp plants that are grown for cannabidiol fuel the global CBD market we know today.

Why is CBD So Popular Now?

The growth of the cannabidiol industry is nothing short of spectacular. According to the Brightview Group website, “From the start of its federal legalization in 2018 to the end of 2019, CBD generated over $4 billion in revenue. At the close of 2020, the hemp market brought in $4.7 billion in the U.S. alone.” Even more, they predict the U.S. cannabidiol market will reach $16 billion in annual sales by the year 2025.

CBD works with your body’s primal endocannabinoid system, a complex and intricate network of receptors that play an integral role in maintaining homeostasis. This internal system has been linked to appetite regulation, mood management, pain relief, and learning and memory functions. The unique nature of each person is reflected within their individualized endocannabinoid systems, which are associated with stress levels, among other factors not mentioned here!

There are several key reasons why cannabidiol has gained this level of popularity. These factors are critical for any well-rounded CBD 101 lesson.

Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoid

One of the main reasons that CBD is so popular is that the cannabinoid is “non-psychoactive”. It also has no adverse effects. In other words, the effects of cannabidiol do not make you feel “high”.

Working professionals and athletes can use it without concern for the effects of cannabidiol on their performance. Today, many sports organizations such as Major League Baseball (MLB) have stopped punishing athletes for using cannabidiol.

Diverse Applications

People from around the globe report that cannabidiol helps quell physical ailments like chronic pain and psychological issues like anxiety. Yet, without formal FDA approval on cannabidiol medicines, most of our knowledge on the effects of cannabidiol comes from patient testimonies. Formal studies into the endocannabinoid system are also beginning to bear fruit.

Millions of people take CBD every day to treat anxiety, sleep disorders, chronic pain, arthritis, PTSD, inflammation, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease, depression, autism, nausea, and headaches. Even more, there are countless products on the market today designed specifically for pets.

What is the History of Cannabidiol?

What is the History of Cannabidiol?

The cannabidiol industry as we know it today has come together for several reasons. Each of these factors is important in a CBD 101 history lesson.

In an interesting turn of events, THC has likely had as much to do with the popularity of CBD as cannabidiol itself. When states like Colorado and Washington legalized adult-use marijuana around 2013, they drew global attention to the massive profit potential of cannabis-derived products. Yet, with THC remaining federally illegal, people began looking for another cannabinoid to fill a growing global interest in medical marijuana.

With careful research, cannabidiol was “discovered” as a new cannabinoid with near-countless applications for health and wellness.

2014 & 2018 Farm Bills

The history of cannabidiol in the United States can be traced back to some important legislation with the USDA.

The CBD market started with a legal loophole in the 2014 Farm Bill. This legislation includes a section that grants colleges and scientists the ability to legally grow hemp for research purposes. However, early cannabidiol manufacturers saw this pilot program as a business opportunity. In turn, they started growing, processing, and selling cannabidiol products across the United States.

It wasn’t until the 2018 Farm Bill passed that hemp was federally legalized in the United States. With this historic legislation, anyone can legally grow cannabis sativa plants as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC. There is no doubt that it took federal legalization to boost the CBD industry to today’s global juggernaut.

Early Days of Cannabidiol and Epidiolex

Cannabidiol had important medical advocates that helped thrust it into the global spotlight. Perhaps none was as impactful as a 5-year-old girl from Colorado named Charlotte Figi of these early influences.

According to NBC News, “Charlotte had Dravet syndrome, an extreme form of epilepsy. At age 5, she suffered as many as 300 grand mal seizures a week, used a wheelchair, went into repeated cardiac arrest, and could barely speak”. Yet, NBC continues, “Charlotte’s symptoms largely disappeared after she began taking an oil infused with a strain .. high in the compound cannabidiol, or CBD”. Charlotte’s success in treating her seizures with cannabidiol helped spotlight the cannabinoid as a legitimate medicine.

As of 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved a single cannabidiol drug for medical use. The pharmaceutical, known as “epidiolex“, was authorized in 2018 to treat epilepsy, including Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. While epidiolex is the only CBD medicine formally recognized by the FDA, there is hope to approve more cannabidiol drugs shortly. In time, hopefully, doctors can include both CBD and THC with medical advice.

Is Cannabidiol Legal?

Is Cannabidiol Legal?

No CBD 101 lesson would be complete without looking at legal issues.

While hemp was legalized in 2018, the CBD industry still operates in a bit of a grey area. A large part of this confusion comes from the fact that the FDA has failed to release definitive guidelines for the legal manufacturing and sale of cannabidiol products.

Today, CBD is considered legal in the United States as long as companies don’t market their products as medicines or dietary supplements. If businesses make medical claims about their cannabidiol products, these goods are immediately deemed illegal in the federal government’s eyes. Unfortunately, consumers are the ones who suffer from this system because the government has not given them any real direction for understanding CBD.

Companies must also navigate conflicting state laws on CBD. As seen with federal regulation, state cannabidiol laws are often extremely confusing. Not only do they change quickly, but different state laws are rarely in agreement with one another.

A major point of contention for companies operating in different state markets is THC levels. For example, some states follow federal guidelines for THC levels of 0.3%, while others only consider products legal when they contain 0% THC.

While there is much to be desired concerning the federal regulation of cannabidiol products, the market has grown exponentially over the past decade.

What is CBD Oil & CBD Extract?

What is CBD Oil & CBD Extract?

All cannabidiol products are originally sourced from cannabis flowers. After flowers are harvested, they are further processed into the many CBD products we see on the market today. A critical part of this manufacturing process is extracting cannabidiol and other beneficial compounds from flowers.

Extracts concentrate cannabidiol by isolating it from other plant materials. Manufacturers make hemp extracts through several processes, including CO2 extraction, hydrocarbon extraction, and ethanol extraction. Once extracted, the concentrated cannabidiol is often referred to as “CBD oil”.

CO2 extraction is the most popular and efficient method for extracting cannabidiol from other plant materials. CO2 extraction technology and practices are largely adopted from the food manufacturing industry. Moreover, leading companies such as Blosum follow strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), as seen with food processing.

Full Spectrum Extracts

A full-spectrum CBD oil includes all of the organic compounds in hemp. Yet, full-spectrum extracts are differentiated from other extracts through trace amounts of THC. Importantly, full-spectrum extracts include the legal 0.3% of THC. CBD product manufacturers capitalize on the THC found in full-spectrum extracts, as many believe it works in unison with other cannabinoids.

Broad Spectrum Extracts

Broad-spectrum CBD oils include all the organic compounds found in flowers, minus the trace amount of THC found in full-spectrum products. These compounds include chlorophyll, terpenes, and flavonoids. Many consumers like broad-spectrum extracts because they believe these organic compounds also have health benefits. Even more, broad-spectrum extracts are a great option in U.S. states where even 0.3% THC is illegal.

Isolate Extracts

Isolate extracts are the most refined extracts on the market. To make these products, companies isolate cannabidiol from the other chemicals found in full-spectrum and broad-spectrum extracts. CBD isolate is particularly popular with athletes because you can consume them without concern for other compounds. Isolate extracts are often marketed as the “purest” cannabidiol products.

What Types of CBD Products are Available?

What Types of CBD Products are Available?

Understanding the difference between products is essential in CBD 101 basics.

After flowers are harvested, they are processed into the myriad of products we see on the market today. Depending on the CBD product in question, several processing stages occur from when crops are harvested to when products are finally consumed. Except for those products composed of raw plant materials (such as flowers), nearly all CBD products on the market today utilize some type of cannabidiol extract.

Flowers

Flowers are the least processed CBD products on the market today. Flowers are simply the “buds” of cannabis plants. They are trimmed and cured before being sold. Consumers often smoke flowers directly.

Topicals

Topicals are cannabidiol products that people use directly on their skin. All topicals are created by mixing CBD extracts with lotions, salves, oils, and other beneficial ingredients. Topicals come in all shapes and sizes and are utilized for various ailments ranging from arthritis to sports injuries.

Edibles

Edibles are foods infused with cannabidiol. Manufacturers generally make edibles by mixing raw food ingredients with extracts, then processing all ingredients into a final product. Because it doesn’t have any residual taste, CBD isolate is a popular ingredient in edibles. There are thousands of edibles on the market today, although gummies and cookies have long been popular products.

Vapes

CBD vapes are made from a blend of vape juice and CBD extracts. Vape manufacturers often use CBD isolate in their products because it doesn’t have any residual flavor. CBD vapes are consumed in the same way as other e-cigarettes, although they don’t contain nicotine. People enjoy vaping because it is considered a healthy alternative to smoking flowers.

Capsules

CBD capsules are a neat and convenient way to consume CBD. To make capsules, manufacturers formulate CBD-infused oil into soft gel form. People enjoy capsules because they offer precision dosing. Even more, capsules don’t include many sugars and bi-products, as seen in most CBD edibles.

Pet Products

There are a good number of CBD pet products available on the market today. These products include treats, chews, tinctures, and capsules. Whether it be anxiety or chronic pain, pets benefit from how CBD works in many of the same ways that people do.

CBD oil for Seizures

For many years the debate as to the use of CBD for relief from seizures was prominent in the news. The surge in reported cases and the possibility of relief caused many to take notice. This attention increased pressure to solve this debate.

As of June 25, 2018, this debate has been resolved, in part. This is the date that the FDA approved the use of CBD in the form of Epidiolex.

Epidiolex is an oral CBD solution that is utilized in seizure patients two years and older suffering from two specific seizure types; Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome.

Research is ongoing to provide the needed answers to include FDA approval for other types of seizure inclusion. However, that is not stopping other seizure sufferers from enjoying the benefits that CBD has provided them with.

While there are only two types of seizures covered, for now, many other seizure sufferers swear by the benefits of CBD use in reducing the occurrence of seizures. This is how these benefits work.

cbd and sleep

CBD oil for Insomnia

Sleep is never more precious than when you have trouble achieving it. For people with insomnia, sleep is the ever-elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. For these people, nights are filled with tossing in bed until they give up and start their day where they left off.

Insomnia may be a sleep issue; however, it causes other medical problems. The lack of sleep causes issues with concentration, immune health, uncontrollable mood changes, and many more. These symptoms have insomniacs clamoring for relief. Often this relief comes in the form of a prescription that poses even more health risks than the lack of sleep itself.

CBD offers a natural alternative to these scary prescriptions. By interacting with receptors within the Endocannabinoid System, CBD promotes the proper function of the receptors that control the way a person sleeps. This positive interaction allows many insomniacs to find the sleep they are so diligently seeking.

CBD helps relieve insomnia in the following ways.

  • It allows the body to stay asleep longer once sleeping.
  • CBD reduces the stress that causes the mind to continue running while the body is trying to rest.
  • It has a calming effect on anxiety, which allows the mind to relax.

Sleep is a luxury that all deserve, not something that should have to be worked for. CBD can help insomniacs achieve a better night’s sleep naturally.

CBD Oil for Headaches and Migraines

CBD oil for Headaches

Another controversial topic when it comes to CBD use for relief is that of headaches. Studies have been inconclusive for scientists to affirm or deny the ability of headache sufferers to receive relief from CBD products.

There are many approved medications for headaches, including migraines. Some of these remedies are available without a prescription, while others require a doctor’s approval and prescription.

These medications will work to varying degrees in relieving headaches and symptoms. However, many of them also come with side effects that are far worse than the headache that prompted their use.

That being said, many who suffer from headaches, especially migraines, will attest to the benefits provided by CBD products. The reason this is, especially in the case of migraines, is the anti-inflammatory abilities of CBD.

Migraines produce pain through inflammation. Many factors can trigger this inflammation. The most common factors are stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, and overstimulation.

CBD products have been shown to relieve most of the ailments that produce triggers for migraines.

  • CBD helps a person relax and provides a calming effect that reduces stress.
  • It helps promote a restful night’s sleep and alleviates the sleep deprivation trigger.
  • It stimulates hunger and relieves this trigger.
  • CBD helps reduce the inflammation that is caused by overstimulation.

With all of the triggers taken out of the equation, it is only natural for the headache to be relieved with the use of CBD.

The issue is often that these thoughts are occurring at a rapid pace and communicative abilities of the person do not allow for the processing and verbalizing of these thoughts.
